Hope Sandoval, Mazzy Star
9th August 1990 Woody’s, NYC
Along with the majority of right-thinking folk I love the music of Mazzy Star and also consider Hope Sandoval to be almost obscenely beautiful.
So I’ve always regretted never having photographed them although I did remember being at a gig of theirs in NYC back in the 90s.
The reason I remember being there is because the gig was at a small basement venue in New York called Woody’s and on the stairs down were framed drawings by the eponymous Ronnie Wood.
And the reason I remember this is because that evening I took a permanent marker from my bag and graffitied on one of them!
The arrogance of youth was strong with me that day; I wrote ‘I’m so rich I just shat myself’, perhaps not my wittiest riposte.
Anyways fast forward to April 2026 and I’m in my physical archive in Dagenham, pulling out some Blur contacts when, looking through the shot list at the front of the binder, there are those two words, Mazzy and Star.
It turns out that I DID photograph them that night and I’d completely forgotten.
3 rolls of beautifully grainy BW perfection.
