Artwork Title: David Bowie - Alexander McQueen Union Jack Frock Coat

Photographed on the opening night of Bowie’s Outside Tour, this image captures him wearing the extraordinary Union Jack frock coat designed by Alexander McQueen. This was one of the garment’s earliest public appearances, several years before it became so closely associated with Bowie through the Earthling album and its imagery.

The blue stage light picks up the red, white and blue of the coat and Bowie’s movement gives the photograph its energy. I particularly like the fact that this was before the coat became so well known through the Earthling album and photographs — here, it is still something new on stage.

McQueen created the coat from a giant Union Jack flag, working with his assistant Ruti Danan to give the fabric its deliberately distressed appearance. They walked on it, threw it around, rubbed it with stones and pulled at it until the pristine flag had taken on the worn, battered quality McQueen wanted.

The coat is now part of the David Bowie Archive at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where it remains a particularly interesting piece of the connection between Bowie and McQueen.
