October 1994   Dartmoor National Park, Devon

Google Sez:

In 1994, Suede filmed their £150,000 music video for the track 'The Wild Ones' on Dartmoor National Park in Devon, England. Directed by Howard Greenhalgh, the gruelling, freezing shoot near Bennett's Cross (near Princetown) is famous for being Richard Oakes's first outing with the band and for Brett Anderson’s hatred of the final video's computer graphics.

The Grueling Shoot

  • The Location: The crew shot scenes around Bennett's Cross, a prominent historic stone cross situated near Princetown on the rugged, misty moors of Dartmoor.
  • The Band's Experience: The musicians and six models were forced to shelter from freezing gales and rain in a Volkswagen Camper Van for 15 hours. Drummer Simon Gilbert and bassist Mat Osman later described it as one of the most miserable experiences of their careers.
  • Lineup Change: The shoot marked the official introduction of a young Richard Oakes, who had just stepped in to replace founding guitarist Bernard Butler. Brett would repeatedly refer to him a ‘Little Dick’ because he was less than Matt Osman’s stature.
  • Behind-the-Scenes: Photographer Steve Double captured iconic, shivering behind-the-scenes photographs of the band on the moors. Yup, that’s me folks!
