This is what I believe, in showbiz terms, is called The B-Stage, the catwalk out into the audience at an arena show.

U2's Zoo TV tour was the first to utilise this and was made possible by the development of In-Ear Monitors allowing the perfomers freedom of motion whilst still being able to hear themselves and their bandmates.
